With a few exceptions most gemstones are minerals and they are classified
according to their chemical composition and crystal formation into seven
categories, called crystal system.

PROPERTIES
HARDNESS - 1 to 10 - meaning as diamond 10 and or as something that can be
scratched with a fingernail.-1
SPECIFIC GRAVITY, or relative density, is the weight of the stone compared
with the weight of the same volume of water.
REFRACTIVE INDEX, the amount of refraction of crystals is constant in the
various types of gems,the amount of the refraction is called refractive index
and is defined as the proportional relation between the speed of light in air
to that in the stone.

Speed of light in air 300000 km / sec.
Speed of light in diamond 125000 km / sec.
